In a landmark release, the United States Mint unveiled the very first Silver American Eagle coin in 1986. Crafted from one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver, this $1 coin marked the beginning of a historic series.
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty—a graceful and enduring symbol of American freedom, first seen on the half dollar in 1916.
On the reverse, artist John M. Mercanti presents a majestic heraldic eagle clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, a powerful image of strength and peace.
This debut edition was struck to the Mint’s high Bullion Uncirculated standard and remains a collector favorite, with a limited production of just over 5.39 million coins worldwide.
