2009 Canadian 50-Cent Special Wrap Roll – Coat of Arms Half Dollar

Canada’s Coat of Arms has been a proud emblem of national heritage since its official proclamation by King George V in 1921. Though it symbolized Canada for decades, the design wasn’t featured on the fifty-cent coin until 1937. It wasn't until 1959 that the national motto, A Mari Usque ad Mare—“From sea to sea”—was added to the coin’s design. In 1997, a further enhancement introduced the motto of the Order of Canada: Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam, Latin for “They desire a better country.”

Today, although the fifty-cent coin is no longer circulated for everyday use, its low mintage and powerful symbolism continue to make it a favorite among serious collectors and proud Canadians alike.

Design Overview:

The Coat of Arms design on the coin is a visual tapestry of Canada’s roots and historic alliances. It includes:

  • The fleur-de-lis representing France

  • Three royal lions and a rose for England

  • The lion rampant and thistle of Scotland

  • The harp of Tara and shamrock symbolizing Ireland

In 1957, the original Tudor Crown in the Arms was replaced by Saint Edward’s Crown, signifying unity among British monarchs rather than one lineage. The most recent update came in 1994, with the addition of the Order of Canada’s inspirational motto.
