DESCRIPTION
2009 Canada King Edward VIII Copper High Relief Antique Finish Medallion
Canada did not always produce its coins domestically. Until the Royal Canadian Mint opened in 1908, Canadian coins were imported from overseas. Even then, the designs and tools remained the domain of the Royal Mint in London while the Canadian facility operated as its Ottawa branch. This began to change in 1930 when the Mint became a wholly owned Canadian institution.
The reverse shows the uncrowned effigy of Edward VIII who was king of Britain from January 20 to December 11, 1936. When he acceded to the throne in January, preparations for new coins bearing his effigy began, but Edward VIII abdicated before the production tools for all the coins to be issued in Britain and its colonies were completed. Hence, this particular effigy never entered circulation in Canada. The effigy itself is in ultra high relief which is reminiscent of ancient medallic art.
