Description
Golden hues on the wing
A cheerful chirping song from a tree in an open space may help you to spot an American Goldfinch (Carduelis tristis). The bright, canary-yellow of the black-capped male will stand out against the landscape, while the more olive-hued female will likely be overlooked.
However, when seen at bird-feeders across southern Canada late in the year, the male Goldfinch will no longer have the bright yellow that’s so strongly associated with it. The colours of both males and females will be much more subdued; predominantly olive-brown with touches of pale yellow, white and black.
The American Goldfinch, also known as the "Wild Canary," is present in North America. It is often found in residential areas, attracted to bird feeders installed by humans, which increases its survival rate in these areas.
