Description
This commemorative silver proof dollar celebrates 100 years of the Calgary Stampede. The reverse image by artist Steve Hepburn centres around a depiction of the wild spirit of the Stampede's bareback bronc rodeo event. A powerful dark-haired horse with blonde tail and mane advances on the viewer head-first, its hind legs fully raised behind in as it prepares to extend them fully behind it. Its front hooves kick up a dramatic cloud of dust and dirt as the fearless cowboy battles for control. From the vantage point of ideal ring-side seats, the viewer perceives in fine detail the required one-arm clutching stance of the mustachioed cowboy whose face, locked in a grim frown of determination, is just visible beneath the brim of his weathered cowboy hat. Against a gleaming polished silver background, the words 'Calgary Stampede' are embossed in Western typeface that gives the feel of an old-time rodeo poster, while the word 'Dollar' in vintage typeface surmounts embossed '2012' and 'Canada' markings. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
