Description
The maple leaf has long been an internationally recognized emblem of Canada – an iconic symbol that has come to represent the history and identity of its people and the land itself. Perhaps fittingly, the maple genus includes many different species, making it as diverse as the population it often represents. In the spirit of this rich natural heritage, this striking silver coin celebrates one of the ten maple species that are native to Canada: the silver maple.

DESIGN:
The reverse image, by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc, depicts three silver maple (Acer saccharinum) leaves. With their edges slightly furled, these leaves are positioned in a way that evokes memories of a beautiful autumn day in Canada – it is easy to imagine these leaves gently falling from the majestic silver maple tree onto the ground below. In the foreground, the largest leaf lies on its side as it stretches across the image field; its long petiole rests overtop the smaller, downward-facing leaf at far left. The large leaf’s bottom left lobe overlaps the base of a third leaf behind it. Beautiful engraving adds depth to the image by showcasing the silver maple’s deeply cut veins and serrate leaf margins.
