Description

Canada’s two-dollar polar bear coin turns 10!
On February 19, 1996, a curious sort of bear began rolling into the pockets of Canadian consumers. It was the new two-dollar coin, Canada’s first bi-metallic circulation coin that was being introduced to replace the two-dollar bank note. People were captivated by the coin’s unique bimetallic construction (a nickel outer ring with an aluminum bronze core) as well as its design  a polar bear standing on the edge of an open section of the Arctic sea ice. Canadian wildlife artist Brent Townsend had perfectly captured the bear’s distinctive profile; a somewhat hunched posture that hints at its lowly gait. But don’t be fooled by the polar bear’s sluggish pace  it’s a deliberate heat-preserving measure that is in stark contrast to the intelligent and quick-witted mind that’s inside! The polar bear has ruled the Arctic for millennia. In doing so, it has captured the imagination of people around the world. Ten years after it came into circulation, it remains eternally fascinating to the people who live here. Don’t miss out on this exceptional anniversary coin. Struck in 22 karat gold with a 4.1 gold core, this exceptional proof coin is one numismatic treasure every bear-lover will want to own!
