Description
2005 First Day Cover 50-Cent Coin
Canada's 50-cent coin bears the Coat of Arms of Canada and honours our founding nations, England, Scotland, Ireland and France. The current Coat of Arms was designed in 1997 incorporating the motto 'Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam' ('They desire a better country'). The 50-cent coin was actually the first coin ever struck in Canada, on January 2, 1908, marking the official opening of the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint. Originally composed of silver, its composition was changed to nickel-plated steel in 2001. This coin is housed in a colourful illustrated folder.
