Description
2005 Butterfly Collection: Great Spangled Fratillary
The fourth coin in our popular Butterfly Collection brings the Great Spangled Fritillary into the spotlight with a dazzling hologram. There are 26 species of fritillaries throughout Canada and the Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele) is one of the largest and most widespread of the “greater” fritillaries. Males are orange with black veins on the upper surface while the females are yellow-brown and darker on the base of the wings. Groups of these brightly coloured butterflies can often be seen in open fields and along roadsides where they feed on milkweeds and thistles. Fast and active flyers, they are a delight to watch.
