DESIGN
The reverse design by Canadian artist Claudio D’Angelo features a highly detailed engraved portrait of a male American goldfinch taking flight in rural Canada. In the engraved background, an ancestral farmhouse rises up from behind a hillock on the right, while a roughly textured split-rail fence stands between the old stone building and the aspen tree on the left. Beneath the partially cloudy sky, the handsome American goldfinch lifts off from its perch on the fence post. The application of rich colour over engraving captures the exquisiteness of its brightly coloured plumage—particularly the striking contrast between its cheerful yellow feathers with white markings and the black of its forehead, outstretched wings and tail. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
