In the heart of our nation’s capital, the hallowed walls of Parliament are home to thousands of carved and sculpted artworks of exceptional beauty. The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to showcase some of the many delights that grace these spaces with this three-coin series featuring carvings inspired by the sculptural art of Parliament.
Coin No. 1: Grotesque Wild Green Man
This $25 coin is 99.99% pure silver, with a diameter of 36 millimetres and a nominal metal weight of 30.75 grams. Engraved in ultra-high relief, the coin features an original depiction by Dominion Sculptor Phil White of a Gothic-style grotesque inspired by a carving found on the East Block of the Parliament Buildings. The image portrays the mythical Wild Green Man. The fierce figure’s foliate hair, brows, moustache, and beard dominate its face along with wide staring eyes and bared teeth. This expressive image seems to emerge from the coin face thanks to detailed engraving in ultra-high relief.
