The War of 1812
–Heralding a Pivotal Moment in Canada’s History
Description:
This coin commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812 features a powerful symbolic representation of the War in a heraldic style that eloquently expresses the allegorical relationships between the people and events of the War of 1812. The eagle, representing American forces, stands powerfully opposed to the lion, who symbolizes the British forces. Between them stretches the shield of military conflict, upon which is emblazoned the maple leaf, signifying the shared resolve of the English- and French-speaking Canadian volunteers and First Nations warriors who worked together to bravely defend their land and ways of life. The coin is embossed with the commemorative dates “1812–2012” and the bilingual hallmark of the Royal Canadian Mint’s renowned purity and craftsmanship, “9999” and “FINE GOLD ¼ OZ OR PUR.”
