While the double dates (“1979—2024”) commemorate the GML’s sapphire (45th) anniversary, so, too, does the genuine grade AAA sapphire droplet that gracefully falls from a leaf on the 1 oz. coin. Shimmering like a drop of dew in the morning light, the sapphire is a sparkling nod to the first GML issued in 1979, when the coins obverse featured Arnold Machin’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II — the same effigy that appears here.
